Down to the Wire
Malmesbury Bowls and Social Club
Friday 25th August saw another game in the Club Competitions go down to the wire. Brian and Tim went into the last end 20-20 after Tim had pulled back three. With his last wood of the last end, Tim removed Brian's holding wood from the head to leave Tim holding two. So Brian, on the forehand, produced a great shot that somehow squeezed the jack out of Tim's two woods onto Brian's nearest wood to win 21-20. Two great shots by two great competitors.
The origin of the expression "Down to the Wire" - People have bet on horse races for centuries and the outcome of these has always been of close interest to punters. Before the days of electronic measurement and photo finishes the method adopted in the 19th century to decide the winner of a close race was to string a wire across the track above the finishing line. Hence down to the wire. It is uncertain if the expression originated in Australia or the USA or both in the 1880s.
Other results in the Club Competitions saw Roger win an epic 34 end game against Brian Reynolds in the Men's Handicap. Jim has advanced to his second final with the Senior Shield, after his win in the Two Woods earlier in the week, Neil is in the final of the Novice, John Curnock is in the semi-final of the Two Woods, and Tina and Brian won their Ladies' Invited semi-final.
