Gaskin Triples Trophy – Bank Holiday Monday, 25th May
On the hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures reaching 34°C, 36 members arrived to play for the Gaskin Triples Trophy.
As is traditional for this event, the competition followed a rotating triples format. However, in view of the extreme heat, each of the 12 teams played three sessions of five ends rather than the usual six, with a well-earned (and much needed!) 10-minute break between each session. Ice creams and ice lollies were available throughout the day to help keep players cool, while the bar did a brisk trade in much-needed drinks for rehydration.
Although the heat made everyone a little quieter than usual, there was still plenty of good-humoured rivalry, fun and moments of bowling brilliance - a true reflection of the outdoor club’s enduring camaraderie.
Congratulations go to Lyn Butler, Gary Carr, and Ian Crook, who won the trophy with a magnificent score of plus 25. Their victory was particularly impressive given that second place finished some way behind on plus 10.
The Spider competition was won by Chrissie Torkington and Mike Newman, with special mention going to Mike, who celebrated his first Spider win after more than 40 years of bowling - a moment well worth acknowledging!
After the final bowls had been delivered, we all made our way into the clubhouse for a well-earned meal. The day’s enjoyment continued long into the evening, with many staying on to relax and socialise under the gazebos while watching a fiercely competitive Tony Alcock match against Woking Park, as the day began to slowly cool.
A big thank you goes to everyone who participated, supported, and helped organise another successful and thoroughly enjoyable club event.
