COMMEMORATING HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY

2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenhau, and the 25th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.

Every year on 27th January, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the Holocaust Memorial Trust commemorates Holocaust Memorial Day. The theme for this year is Standing Together.

To mark the day, the Ashford Borough Council is hosting an exhibition based around this theme, which explores how genocidal regimes throughout history have deliberately divided societies by marginalising certain groups. We can challenge these tactics by standing together with our neighbours and speaking out against oppression.

The exhibition, in the Visitor Services Area at the Gateway in Ashford town centre, is open from Monday 13 January to Monday 3 February and will inform visitors about Holocaust Memorial Day and the work that the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust does.

The Gateway is open from 9am to 5pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 9am to 6pm on Thursday, 9am to 3pm on Saturday and closed on Sunday.

Residents are encouraged to visit the exhibition and mark this significant date. As the number of holocaust survivors declines, it is all the more important that we remember the lessons that history has taught us.
