The searing heat forecast today for Oakley duly arrived and those members who entered the one-day triples were very relieved that our Competition Secretary had changed the format from three to two bowl triples, so ensuring the event was finished before the worst of the afternoon heat.

Players were divided into two leagues with the Red League being won by an undefeated Simon Turner, playing his first competition in 4 years, Harry Baker, who professes to dislike two bowl matches, and Laura Butler. In the final they met Hugh Aherne, who began bowling in July, Richard Startin and Shirley Ball. The latter trio reached the final, after losing a match in the Blue League but pipped the triple, skipped by Colin Wood due to a better shot difference.

The final was a good game and resulted in a win for Laura's triple. Congratulations go to them, to all those who participated and to the members who stayed on for the final, finding shelter from the sun in some unlikely places and depleting the ice cream stocks. Hopefully there are sufficient remaining for tomorrow, when we host the Finals of The Whitchurch League competitions.
