An issue has been reported concerning the 'e-mail alert' notifiers sent to subscribers, alerting them to newly-posted News Items on this website; some of these recent e-mails are being classified by receiving e-mail systems as 'junk/spam', and are hence not being seen by subscribers.

To identify if you are affected, and if so how to resolve this, please read on:

Actions for subscribers:

Short version:

  • If no such notifier e-mails have been received in the last month for the various news items posted since April, junk/spam folders should be checked.
  • The e-mail sending address 'notifications@hugofox.com' should be added as a safe sender / contact, and any such G&F-website-sourced e-mail alert notifiers should be marked as 'not junk’. Details of how to do this vary according to each subscriber's ISP / ESP / e-mail application.
  • Subscribers may also note that it seems possible that this issue exists with other websites on the HugoFox platform (such as other local Bowling Clubs and Associations), as e-mail alerts are not unique to the G&F website.

Expanded version is in the sections below:

  • Owners of websites such as ours (like those for many local Bowling Clubs and Associations) that run on the ‘HugoFox' platform have no visibility of nor control over such subscriptions, so are unable to otherwise identify or communicate direct with their subscribers to whom the info in this news item is directed.
  • To check if you are subscribed to this website, try to re-subscribe (‘sign up to our e-mail alerts' blue box on each website page); existing subscribers will see an ‘edit’ message to advise that subscriptions exist for the entered e-mail id.
Issue:
  • Recent e-mail alert notifiers for G&F news/events have been newly classified by some subscribers’ e-mail systems as ‘junk/spam’, instead of being ‘cleared’ to be processed into in-boxes, so are not being seen by affected subscribers.
Explanation:
  • Determination of whether any e-mail is to be treated as ‘junk/spam’ or ‘cleared' for an e-mail inbox is performed by the Internet Service Provider (ISP) and/or E-Mail Service Provider (ESP) of recipients (not by the sender), using sophisticated filters, algorithms, and historical data to evaluate and categorize incoming emails. Each such provider has its own set of criteria to determine whether an email is junk/spam, which means that an email may pass through one provider’s filters but be flagged by another’s. Additionally, filters are constantly updated to keep pace with evolving spam tactics, so what was once considered acceptable may now be treated differently.
  • The website platform owner HugoFox recently changed the e-mail address from which such e-mail alert notifiers are sent, and this may be the source of the issue.
    • Even though the e-mail alert notifiers continue to come from ‘Gosport Fareham _ District Mixed Triples League’, the underlying sending e-mail address (visible by hovering a device-pointer or finger over the ‘from’ field, or clicking/tapping the small down arrow after the word ‘League’) was ’team@hugofox.com’ or ’noreply@hugofox.com’. The new underlying sending e-mail id is ’notifications@hugofox.com’.
Recommended resolution actions (from HugoFox support):
  • Subscribers should check their e-mail ‘junk/spam’ folders for recent G&F e-mail alert notifiers.
  • Subscribers should add 'notifications@hugofox.com' as a safe sender or contact, and mark any such G&F-website-sourced e-mail alert notifiers as 'not junk’. Details of how to do this vary according to the subscriber's ISP / ESP / e-mail application, from whom further guidance (FAQs, etc) should be available if required.
