JILL COOK
Lee-on-the-Solent Bowling Club
It is with great sadness we report that Jill Cook, an Honorary Life Member of our Club, passed away peacefully on 29th December following a long and hard-fought battle against illness. Jill was a much loved and respected member of our Club who was a true ambassador for the sport of bowls, who as well as being a formidable bowler both outdoors and indoors, supported the work of Bowls Hampshire, Portsmouth & District Women’s Bowling Association (P&DWBA) and of course our own Club.
Jill was the Hampshire Ladies' President in 2003 and an honorary life member of Bowls Hampshire. She worked tirelessly for the County, was a County Selector representing the Eastern Region as well as being a member of the Executive since Bowls Hampshire was formed in 2011. Other County posts which Jill held with distinction included Yearbook and Press Officer, Area Competition Secretary, Eastern Area Selector and one of three Eastern Area delegates for the Executive. On the green Jill regularly represented Hampshire in the Johns Trophy and was part of their winning squad in 2008.
Jill, together with Peter, for many years served on our club’s Management Committee, during which time as Ladies' Secretary, she organised with great efficiency the Club’s entries for the P&DWBA competitions, many of which she played in with great success. At Lee Jill was a former Club President and more recently an Honorary Life Member. On the green she regularly played with distinction in the Club’s P&DWBA Ladies ‘A’ team, the G&F Mixed Triples League Woods team as well as supporting Club competitions. Off the green, Jill together with Peter, were regular supporters of Club social activities including quizzes, bingo and whist, before the latter sadly folded due to lack of support.
At a personal level I had the privilege of both frequently working and bowling with Jill. Whatever the occasion she was always happy, supportive and very sporting and I cannot recall her ever expressing a cross word about anyone or anything. As a fellow lead bowler, I always knew that when I was drawn to play against her that I would always be in for a tough game and I cannot recall ever getting the better of her despite her continual sporting encouragement. Thank you for the bowling lessons you gave me, Jill.
Naturally as a Club we offer our condolences to Peter and his family at this very sad time and offer them our love and support we can provide during these difficult Covid times.
