HENRY SHOWS US A TASTE OF THE FUTURE
Henry Hoyles became the youngest player to win President's Day on a stunning afternoon of bowls at the Eagle & Child. In a tense final, the talented fifteen year old jousted closely with Nigel Tomlinson before making the break at 15-14 to run out and lift The Arthur Parker Trophy.
As well as the lad's obvious skill and silky delivery, we witnessed an all round performance that also exhumed patience, composure and guile to get through a few sticky situations on the way. Notably at 0-13 against a storming start from Ann Rimmer in the quarter-finals, Henry also faced stubborn resistance from Frank Brown in the last sixteen and then a remarkable fight from Julie Anderton in the semi-finals.
Matt Brown's win as a seventeen year old in 2022 looked a record unlikely to be touched at the time, but young Henry's come on to the scene and followed up his semi-final at the first attempt twelve months ago to begin his last year at St Mary's High School as our new champion.
This was just a taste of what is likely to be a great future in the game for Henry. Everyone at the club was proud as punch for him, but particularly his parents and grandparents who were there to watch his every move as this little bit of history unfolded.
