Following investigations carried out today, it has been confirmed that the voids identified along the edge of the carriageway are the result of historical excavations. As there is no available evidence or clear timeline indicating when these works were undertaken, it has not been possible to establish who carried them out.

Due to the depth of the excavations and the associated safety risk, the lane closure will remain in place while remedial works are undertaken through the capital works programme. An update on the timescales for these remedial works will be provided once the works have been formally raised and scheduled.

We would also like to clarify that a number of social media posts have incorrectly suggested that the lane closure is due to vehicles turning onto the southbound carriageway in the wrong direction. This is not the case. The signage and road markings have been assessed and confirmed to be clear, compliant, and in good condition.

***update 5th February 2026***

The contractor attended site today and started the works to rectify the issues on the A24. The contractor has identified that the voids are significantly larger than originally anticipated. As a result, a much greater quantity of material has been required than first expected.

Unfortunately, this means the A24 will not be reopened by this weekend. However, subject to weather conditions and any other unforeseen circumstances, we do not anticipate the lane closure remaining in place beyond Monday evening.

Further updates will be provided as the works progress.
