Helping to shape the development of a town is something that all residents, workers and business owners can become involved in. Whether it’s a new service, project or general day to day running of the town, the opinions of local people can be invaluable in helping to inform larger decisions.

One incredible way to help bring these voices together and perhaps just as importantly; ensure they are heard, is to become a Town Councillor.

Battle Town Council currently has 2 vacancies for Councillors: one each in the Marley and Netherfield wards. If you live or work in Battle and would be interested in helping serve your community and have a say on how to develop the town please read on!

What are Battle Town Council Looking For?

A successful Town Councillor will need to have a passion for their town, a very real interest in making a difference and have the time to volunteer approximately 3 hours of their services per week. As part of a Councillor’s duties, individuals will be expected to attend monthly Full Council meetings as well as relevant monthly and bi-monthly Committee meetings. All meetings are held on Tuesdays at 7.30pm in The Almonry, making it a little easier to plan around other commitments. Due to the current Covid-19 conditions however, meetings are currently being held remotely via Zoom until further notice.

Who Can Stand?

The Council would love to hear from a wide range of individuals interested in becoming a Town Councillor. However there are a few prerequisites that will need to be considered for the post. Subject to the rules on disqualification, to stand for Town Councillor an individual must be a British Citizen (or a Citizen of the Commonwealth). Candidates must also be over 18 years of age and a registered elector.

In addition, candidates will be qualified to stand if, during the 12 months before the nomination or day of election:

- Resided in the Parish (or within 3 miles of the Parish boundary) or

- Occupied (as owner or tenant) any land or premises within the Parish or

- Have a primary or principle place of work in the Parish

Becoming a Town Councillor is a fantastic opportunity to have a real impact not only for the period of service but for generations ahead; helping to shape the history of a special town with an already long-standing heritage.
