Tonight, at Malshanger, Oakley played Old Basing in the Men's National Top Club and although the hosts probably started as favourites the initial exchanges suggested a close match was in prospect. After about an hours play the Two Wood Singles was tied at 10-10, the 4 Wood had Basing in front and the visitors also led in the Pairs where Oakley, with debutant skip Sean Lassman, had dropped a first end 6. Oakley's worries, however, receded a little as Terry Heath eased home in the Two Wood Singles and Ric Newson recovered from 15-17 to win the Four Wood Singles. Two of the five disciplines had now been secured and when the Oakley Triple had a purple patch the game moved quickly away from Basing who conceded the game 0-5 with 4 ends left to play in the Pairs and Fours. Oakley scores: Terry Heath won 17-10, Ric Newson won 21-17, Malcolm Grime and Sean Lassman won 21-11, Martin Smith, Dave Harrison and Stan Mond won 25-9, Ashley Nethercliffe, Eric Lamkin, Spencer Kerley and Ted Brown won 18-10
