The Parish Council would like to thank everyone who responded to our request for your thoughts and ideas for the naming of the new roads in the Sycamore Place housing development in the Potts area of Barrasford. The PC has collated responses and replied to Northumberland County Council as below:

Chollerton Parish Council thanks you for seeking our views on the proposed road names for the new 'Sycamore Place' development.

It is of note that the development is being promoted online by Cussins as 'uniquely designed to perfectly blend with the village’s surroundings'.

Barrasford has a long history of naming houses and streets after historic references to the areas concerned. Two developments are perfect examples of this. The road and houses built on the location of Chishillways Farm are now simply known as '1 - xx Chishillways, Barrasford' and the road and houses on farmland previously known as 'East Acres' are now '1- xx East Acres, Barrasford'.

To further the process of the new development blending in with the existing village homes, and so helping new residents become a part of the community, it is important that this process continues through to the naming of the new roads.

To this end, the Parish Council has sought opinion from residents and specific community groups, notably members of the History Society, who authored the comprehensive 'Barrasford and Gunnerton Historical Village Atlas' in 2000.
Whilst there have been a number of suggestions put forward, it is important to recognise that not a single person has supported the developer's proposed names of 'Rosewood Close' and 'Wisteria Way'. They are considered generic, unrelated to the area and proposed for their marketing benefits only. There is, for example a 'Wisteria Place' in the new Great Park development near Newcastle. It would be wrong to simply pick names from 'The generic book of attractive sounding street names' for what is the first new road in Barrasford for over 20 years. The village deserves a better proposal.
It is also considered unnecessary to have 2 street names for such a relatively few number of houses. There is precedent for this simple approach. The land opposite 'Sycamore Place' was historically known as 'East Acres' and, when developed some years ago, the Council sensitively and simply numbered the houses, in a series of joined roads, 1 to 42 East Acres.
As a Parish Council we have reviewed the community suggestions and would like to put forward the following for consideration:
  • 1 to 14 The Pottes, or Potts

This is the by far the most favoured option. The area has been known as 'The Potts' for many years, going back to The Pottes field enclosure of 1347. The development itself is know locally as 'The Potts development' and will continue to be so; formally naming it as such will reduce any confusion and make life simpler for locals and delivery drivers.

  • 1 to 14 Whinstone Way/View

The Northumberland Whinstone Company Limited was the first registered quarry company in the area, formed in the early nineteenth century. The Whin Sill rock formation runs through the village to the current Barrasford Quarry. The name therefore has historical and current significance.

  • 1 to 14 The Steppings

The enclosures of 1774 named part of the area 'The Steppings'.

We hope these suggestions are received in the positive way in which they have been carefully considered and presented
