It was misty this morning as we arrived at Malshanger for the Final of the Club Mixed Pairs - the Rutherford Bowl. This was one of our finals that had to be delayed for a week due to players being involved in the National Championships. It was a difficult game to predict. Janie Vickers had reached this final on seven occasions, six of which had been with her current partner Sean Lassman. Mary Varndell had reached thirteen finals and was accompanied by Bob Goodyear, no previous final in this event but with almost 60 years of bowling experience. Mary and Bob made an excellent start scoring 7 shots in the first two ends, but Janie and Sean quickly scored 5 shots in reply and a close encounter looked possible. Mary and Bob had the better of the next seven ends, as the sun came through, a score of 5 on the 13th end took them out to a commanding lead of 19-7, after which there was little their opponents could do to change the course of the game which was conceded at 19 ends.
