Notice from National Rail regarding planned works near St Mary's View and Hop Garden Crescent - April 2026 onwards

Railway improvement Works – Newington Embankment Stabilisation Works

We are writing to let you know about some planned work to strengthen the railway embankment near St Mary’s View and Hop Garden Crescent in Newington. A full copy of the letter pictured with this notice is available via email. Please complete the contact form below to request a copy.

Where the work will take place

Work will take place on both sides of the railway within the railway boundary.

  • St Mary’s View side: reshaping the slope to make it more stable.
  • Hop Garden Crescent side: strengthening the embankment by installing steel supports within the embankment.

What you may notice during daytime weekdays between May and July 2026.

  • Staff on site
  • Vegetation and trees being cleared to reshape and stabilise the embankment.
  • Construction vehicles arriving and leaving via agreed access routes.
  • We will be using Church Lane for our deliveries and access to the railway.
  • Two parking bays will be restricted as shown in the photo below on St Mary’s View.

This work will generally take place between 7am and 5pm and during some weekends. Some elements of the work can only be safely carried out when trains are not running which means there will be a small number of planned weekend closures.

During those weekends:

  • More activity than usual will take place
  • On the Hop Garden Crescent side, we will be piling steel ground supports into the embankment which will involve controlled hammering using a piling machine which can be noisy and you may feel some vibrations for those living nearby but will be temporary.
  • We will be using Church Lane for our deliveries and access to the railway where our site compound will be located.
  • Work will continue on the St Mary’s View side to reshape the embankment to improve its stability. The two parking bays will continue to be restricted.

The noisiest work has been planned to take place between 8am and 8pm only. We will not routinely work late at night in residential areas and will stop earlier wherever reasonably practicable.
