NOVICE SINGLES DAY

Traditionally the Oakley Acorn Singles has been open to any player who has not won a Singles Competition. This year, however, it was decided to try a new format with the event being played on a single day and entry restricted to players with three years or less bowling experience. With players divided into four groups and the group leaders going into the semi-final there was some excellent bowling, given that many of the competitors had never previously played a singles game. Indeed three of the semi-finalists were not even members of the Club at this stage last year. In the first semi, Mark Lawner had a comprehensive victory over Dave Cosgrove whilst Hugh Aherne, who joined the Club after attending the Bowls Big Weekend at the end of May, had a good win over Richard Wallis. With both semi final winners still undefeated the final was expected to be close and so it proved with Mark Lawner getting home by just one shot. Congratulations to all who made this a super day and thanks to Kay for organising it. Views expressed subsequently suggest the format will be retained for 2023.
