We could not have asked for better weather for Oakley Bowling Club's trip last evening to Newbury Races. Organised by Diane Yarrall and the Social Committee we had our own table on the Parade Ring Lawn and, apart from some early delays in obtaining our first drinks, we were well looked after by the staff. Some members were content just to sit in the sun and enjoy the races and their drinks. Others hoped to make their fortunes with frequent visits to the bookies but, as far as we know, no-one became an oligarch on the night. However, two Past Presidents Ric Newson and Peter Bown claimed to have made a profit. Our current President claimed to have broken even, but if you do not place a bet you cannot win or lose and you run the risk of being known as Scrooge Spencer! Kay, however, ensured Scrooge was out of pocket. For some it was a first attendance at a race meeting but, as we all tumbled into our bus at 9.15 pm for the short trip home, the concensus was that it had been a thoroughly enjoyable evening and all hoped the Social Committee will continue to organise trips that allow members to socialise off the green and get to know each other better.
