National Finals

A number of bowlers from the Portsmouth & District Area reached the 2022 National Finals at Royal Leamington Spa following success in the County Championships and Bowls England Competitions.

The most successful were the Men’s Pair of Gary Starks & Danny Smith (Southsea Waverley BC). John Biggs should have been partnering Gary, but the former’s son had set his wedding date for when the Men’s Pairs were going to be played, so Danny Smith played as his substitute (a role he had also filled during the early rounds).

  • They had a bye in the Preliminary Round, then beat a pair from Hertfordshire 21-8 in the 1st Round, then a pair from Oxfordshire 17-15 in the 2nd, meaning they had reached the Quarter-Finals

  • Unfortunately, that’s where their bowling ended as they lost, agonisingly by 1shot, 16-15, to a pair from Warwickshire.

Our next successful entries were Molly Firth & Keira Patel (Milton Park Ladies BC) in the Junior (Under 25) Pairs.

  • In the 1st Round, they beat a pair from Bedfordshire 24-6 before losing their 2nd Round game 20-10 to a Hertfordshire Pair.

Our other reps all lost in the first matches they played. In order of appearance, they were:

  1. In the Ladies Triples, Rosemary Bailey, Sheena Mack & Sandy Pullin (Fareham BC) lost their Preliminary round match 9-25 to a Suffolk trio.

  2. In the Men’s Triples, Bryan Cherry, Tony Hall & David Brown (Milton Park BC) lost their 1st round match 16-21 to a Gloucester trio. However, they did have the privilege of playing on the rink used in the televised Commonwealth Games Finals!

  3. In the Men’s Pairs, Steve Smith & Adrian Snook (Priory BC) lost their 1st round match 12-18 to another Hertfordshire pair.

  4. In the Ladies Pairs, Joan Dawkins & Caroline Cuerden (Lee-on-the-Solent BC) lost their Preliminary round match 8-29 to a Suffolk pairing.

  5. In the Ladies Junior Singles, Molly Firth (making her second appearance of the finals fortnight) lost her Preliminary round match 8-21 to a Kent opponent.

  6. In the Men’s Junior Singles, Alfie Smith (Portsmouth Water BC) lost his 1st round match 15-21 to a Cumbrian opponent.

The Last Weekend of the National Finals was a busy time for Gary Starks.

  • First up he was paired with Tina Chambers (Milton Park Ladies BC) in the Mixed Pairs.

    • They had reached Leamington by winning their All-England Round of 32 game 21-4 against a Surrey pairing and then their Round of 16 15-13 against a Sussex pair.

    • Unfortunately, they lost their 1st match at Leamington, the Quarter Final, 14-20 to a Northumberland Pair

  • His Final appearance was as a member of Hampshire’s Team in the Balcomb Trophy (a National County 2-Rink Competition) that had reached the Semi-Finals for the 2nd year running. Gary played skip in Hampshire’s second rink.

    • To get there, Hampshire had beaten the IoW 43-37 in the Area Round, meaning they had reached the Regional Finals.

    • In the Regional Semi, Hampshire beat Kent 37-28

    • In the Regional Final, Hampshire beat Berkshire 42-36 to get through to the National Finals.

    • Their hopes of getting further then they did the previous year were then dashed, as they lost 32-42 to Yorkshire.
