RESIDENTS WARNED ABOUT SCAM EMAIL

Rutland County Council is warning residents not to respond to unsolicited emails offering refunds for an overpayment.

Several Rutland residents have contacted the Council after receiving an email that appears to come from HM Revenue & Customs and claims to offer are fund following a City Council overpayment for late 2017.

Councillor Gordon Brown, Portfolio Holder for Revenues and Benefits at Rutland County Council, said: “Always be wary of unsolicited emails offering refunds, discounts or asking for you bank details. If we need to contact you about a refund then, in the vast majority of cases, we will do this by letter. Only in exceptional circumstances, when someone has moved address without telling us, will we try to contact you by email and this will only ever come from a Rutland County Council email address. If you receive a scam email you should contact Action Fraud straight away to report it."

Contact Action Fraud, the UK’s national fraud and cybercrime reporting centre, on 0300 123 2040 or through the Action Fraud website: www.actionfraud.police.uk.
