We have had a lot of response to our recycling post.

In a nutshell, we said the black bins were often full of recyclables and the knock on effect is that -

a) The black bins run out of space too quickly
b) Black sacks (often containing food waste) were being left on the floor and encouraging vermin
c) The council are refusing to empty bins that don't have the correct rubbish

The feedback we received was split.

Some residents said it's just laziness and there's a hardcore of people who have no intention of recycling and just take everything to the bin store in a black sack regardless.

Other residents said a lot of people struggle with recycling because of the design of the bins.

We must admit we find the bin designs absurd and we know the office has previously raised this with Basildon Council. So we contacted the new local councillor to discuss the matter. He said he'd had similar reports from sheltered housing where people were getting their hands stuck in the bin openings. So, he's agreed to visit the site on Thursday to take a look at what we're talking about and hopefully to help us get change.
