Many of we mortals living in Burghwallis have been bewitched, bothered and bewildered by the road closures or restrictions feeding the village.

It seems odd that the City, who have most residents on email don't use this service to give first hand information on their activites .You can of course look things up on the DMBC website and behold the reason for the closure on Burghwallis Lane until 16th July is as follows;

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT ONLY - TO ALLOW SAFE OPERATION FOR FLUSHING DUE TO EMERGENCY REZONE REQUIRED ON BURGHWALLIS LANE.

Could be just me but this sounds like Trump speak. A quick link to AI gave the inital answer “No idea flower”. Adding a bit about road works to the search produced the following. In case you are wondering the City don’t actually say what they are doing but we live in hope they going to chuck some ‘black stuff’ into the fairly massive holes that have appeared in the road. And in case anyone asks you can quote the following AI interpretation of the work in progress:

For road repair, “flushing” in emergency ops usually means clearing/cleaning the affected roadway and drainage after a closure/repair (not water-line flushing). If you mean that, here’s a practical emergency procedure framework:

  1. Rezone / traffic control
  • Remove debris (sweep/vacuum first)
  • “Flush” / clean the roadway (after repair and/or during interim phases)
  • Confirm the repair area is secured (no loose debris, standing water hazards).
  • If asphalt/cement is involved: set exclusion until surface is safe to drive on.
  • Ensure emergency access routes remain open for responders.
  • Hazard and safety checks
  • Establish an emergency work zone (cones/barriers), set detour/alternate routes, and control access (flaggers/signage).
  • Verify speed reduction and lane/shoulder closures match the road class and jurisdiction rules.
  • Post proper overhead/portable signage if work blocks through traffic.
