Roads and road maintenance

With the arrival of wintery weather, residents are reminded that issues such as potholes, flooding and fallen trees should be logged on the HCC website https://www.hants.gov.uk/transport/roadmaintenance/roadproblems

Hampshire County Council is responsible for Highways (with a duty under the Highways Act 1980 to ensure that the highway is not obstructed) and is also the Lead Local Flood Authority.

Trees close to roads need to be managed to make sure that they do not cause danger to people, vehicles, and neighbouring properties. HCC manage trees growing on highway land. That means trees on public roads and pathways and generally (but not always) the verges beside them. HCC do not manage trees on private property – the land owner or occupier is responsible for these trees. As you put the garden to bed, please cut back your vegetation to within your boundary or above the heights advised by HCC - anything overhanging a footway must be at least 2.1m above the footway or verge and 5.2m above the road surface.

Water Flooding can be caused by the sheer volume of water or indicate a blockage or maintenance problem with the system. Any flooding or drainage issue should be reported to HCC so that it can be dealt with and the system checked for adequacy. If you have a watercourse (including streams, ditches, drains, pipes and culverts) crossing or bordering your property, you are responsible for ensuring the proper flow of water is not impeded and drainage can take place.
