To commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War, Ashendon Parish Council purchased two ‘Silent Soldiers’. One of these was erected in the centre of the village near the church and the other near the hamlets of Upper Pollicott and Lower Pollicott in memory of Walter Ewers who lived in that part of the parish. Walter served in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and was killed on 28th August 1916 age just 21. Villagers were distressed to find that this memorial had been stolen overnight on Wednesday 7th November. The memorial has no recycling value and this appears to pure vandalism and a total disrespect of those who gave their lives so that we might be free. The second memorial was in memory of Albert Lay of the same regiment, who died on 12th December 1915 age only 20.
