For the last sixteen years, the residents of Horton Kirby and South Darenth have had a unique homing beacon throughout the month of December – the Christmas star that shines bright on top of St Mary’s Church. The star has become synonymous with Christmas in the village, with its dazzling light being visible for miles.

Much like many of our 2020s celebrations not going to plan this year, neither will the star shine from the top of our much-loved St Mary’s Church. As the gale force winds earlier this year caused tremendous damage to the flagpole and church roof which cannot be mended at present due to the current restrictions.

This year the star will be relocated and sparkly from The Bull pub in Horton Kirby. The stars new caretakers, landlords Katy and Danny Goldsbrough have positioned the star on the rear of the pub to ensure it can be seen by as many residents as possible. Given the sheer size and shape of the star, it has taken an enormous amount of effort to erect the star in time for the 1st December. A massive thank you for all of those involved for making this happen and for helping to shine a light during a very challenging year.

During the pandemic, all of our local businesses, schools, and churches has been affected. Therefore if you can this year please show your gratitude by supporting your local community in any way you can.
