People using the bus at Alton station will have been aware that the shelter had been deteriorating in recent years. The perspex panels had become opaque and more recently, one had dropped out. Thus, not only did it look horrible, but its capicity to shelter people from the rain was greatly reduced.

Local resident Peter Desmond-Thomas, working on behalf of Friends of Alton Station, lobbied Alton Town Council to get something done about it. Councillor Graham Hill took it on and the local voluntary group 'Men in Sheds' were asked if they would be prepared to undertake the repairs.

The final part of the jigsaw was the funding. The cost of the new perspex panels was jointly bourne by Alton Town Council and the South West Trains Community Rail Partnerships. The panels were replaced on the 18th August by the Men in Sheds, meaning that the bus shelter is now looking as it should.

The Friends of Alton Station would like to offer their gratitude and thanks to all involved. A job well done.
