Swaffham Sheep Fair 2018

The 2018 Swaffham Sheep Fair Whitsun weekend was a great success, bringing the community together and encouraging visitors to Swaffham.

This year saw the first Sheep Fair in Swaffham for about 60 years, a wonderful tradition to restart and plans are already underway for 2019.

The event involved the Friday indoor market, with sheep themed stalls and stalls selling local lamb products; an extended market on Saturday with extra stalls; a mock charity sheep auction on the Buttercross and local businesses very much involved with sheep themed menus and sheep related products and a sheep themed shop window competition.

On Saturday live sheep returned to the market place to recreate the sheep fair with a modern twist, sheep of different native breeds were on display and in the afternoon the sheep were mock auctioned.

The Mock Sheep auction raised a phenomenal £552 which was shared amongst charities nominated by Cllrs and organisers:

  • Swaffham Market Committee Chairman, Cllr S Lister - Myers Field Trust - £70
  • Cllr Fabian Eagle - Nelsons Journey - £100
  • Cllr Ed Colman - Merle Boddy Centre - £60
  • Elizabeth Truss MP - Magpie riding centre for the disabled - £95
  • Melsop Farm - Rare Breeds Survival Trust - £65
  • The Mayor of Swaffham, Cllr Houghton - Royal British Legion, Swaffham Branch - £52
  • Impson Butchers – East Anglian Air Ambulance - £110

There were so many people involved in the planning, organisation and delivery of the event who deserve recognition:

  • Cllrs Fabian Eagle and Ed Colman – instrumental in getting the event off the ground and powering the event promotion and engagement of suppliers and businesses in the town.
  • Swaffham Town Council – for the administration of the event and on the day delivery
  • Melsop Farm - provided the rare breed sheep who were the central attraction on the Saturday
  • Heygates Farm – for allowing the Antinghams to be used as an overflow car park
  • Swaffham Young Farmers – for their support in managing the overflow car park
  • Local businesses – for their themed menus, products and taking part in the shop window competition.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the first Swaffham Sheep Fair such a success.

Volunteering and community involvement is what Swaffham is good at.
