Have your say on SYF&R money saving proposal

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue is asking people to have their say on the way it proposes to meet a financial shortfall of up to £4 million.

The service is already taking various steps to save money and has been doing for many years, but the shortfall currently being faced is potentially quite significant.

The key proposal being put forward is to reduce the amount of firefighters riding an engine from five to four. The service would rather do this than slow down response times to some areas across South Yorkshire, by reducing the amount of fire engines they have available round-the-clock.

The service says that this is a change that has been adopted by many other fire and rescue services nationwide, is already something they do around a third of the time already and that no firefighters would lose their jobs – with the reductions being achieved gradually as and when firefighters retire.

You can read more about the proposals and complete the consultation survey, which only takes a couple of minutes, at www.syfire.gov.uk/haveyoursay
