Members of the public are now being invited to share their views on the council’s draft Net Zero Strategy. It was previously considered and approved by members of the council’s Cabinet on Thursday 22 September.

The draft Net Zero Strategy, which focuses specifically on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, is the latest step in a plan to achieve a reduction in the council’s core carbon footprint to Net Zero by 2030.

There are two engagement surveys to choose from on the website - thanet.gov.uk/netzero. The shorter survey should take about five minutes, or there is the option to complete a more in-depth survey, likely to take up to 15 minutes to complete.

The engagement period ends on Friday 11 November 2022. At the end of this period, responses will be reviewed and any recommendations summarised in a report to be submitted to the council’s climate change advisory group, before being presented to Cabinet.

Cllr Bob Bayford, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services and Special Projects, and Chair of the Climate Change Cabinet Advisory Group said: “Tackling climate change is a priority – we must act now to reduce our carbon footprint. The strategy shows how we will meet our net zero pledge. It also outlines how we’ll work with other organisations and lobby the government.

“I would urge everyone to read the draft strategy on our website. Please complete one of the surveys to let us know what you think. Achieving net zero is a collective endeavour. It’s something we all need to get involved with. It may seem ambitious but it’s absolutely necessary.”

The draft strategy shows how the council will meet its net zero pledge and is split into three parts:

  1. Addressing emissions in Thanet District Council’s core carbon footprint to achieve net zero by 2030
  2. Addressing the wider council emissions that we have partial control over by 2050 at the very latest
  3. Supporting Kent County Council, government, business, industry and the community to reduce emissions generated across the district by 2050 at the latest.
