It was a promising start for Oakley as tonight they played their first competitive game of the season against Cove "A" in the Men's National Double Rink Competition. The nomenclature "A" was misleading in as much as Cove's Middleton Cup stars had obviously elected to play in their "B" side but nonetheless given the strength in depth at Cove a close match was expected. It did not turn out that way, as Cove struggled with a green that is heavier than their own, and, after a quick start by Ted Brown's rink, Oakley, at 5 ends, led by 7. Fred Norris's rink then had a purple patch scoring 17 shots over the next 5 ends so that, at half way Oakley led by 23 shots. Try as they did to claw back this deficit, the task for Cove was too difficult and with a total of 7 ends left the game was conceded with Oakley leading 52-22.

Oakley Scores: Ric Newson, Dave Harrison, Trevor Wearn and Ted Brown won 21-10, Ashley Nethercliffe, Malcolm Grime, Spencer Kerley and Fred Norris won 31-12
