7th March, 2023: Update from the Met Office

Please be advised that there has been an update to the YELLOW WARNING FOR SNOW valid Thurs 03:00 – Fri 18:00

The warning remains with a Very Low Likelihood of High Impacts, however a little more detail has been added, as detailed below. Please see the full warning at: https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2023-03-09&id=75899604-0a9a-4cbd-8276-f38de60e0340.

Snow could develop quite widely across the warning area through Thursday and Friday as a low pressure system and associated fronts move across the UK.

More southerly counties such as Cheshire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester are currently expected to see the worst of the conditions develop from early on Thursday, with a band of snow spreading north across northern English counties and persisting through Friday. Event totals could bring 3 to 5 cm widely across the North, with 5 to 10 cm of snow across broad areas, even at low elevations, with potentially 15 to 20 cm accumulating over modest elevations.

Higher elevations, mainly above 150 m, including the North Pennines, Cumbrian Fells and Northumberland may see as much as 30 to 40 cm of snow in places. In addition, there is potential for strong winds, which may lead to blizzard conditions and drifting of lying snow.

Reason for update: to provide additional details on most likely evolution and development.
