Match Reports 2024

Match reports for the week ending 12th May:

Townsend Bowls Club, of Waverley Road, St Albans, welcomed a strong contingent from Berkhamsted for a four rink midweek match.

The weather was kind, with bright sunshine making the occasion most pleasant, and the fast green received compliments from all quarters.

Townsend started strongly but their guests soon found their rhythm, and with tea being taken after 9 ends, the home team then needed to refocus in order to cement their victory. As it was Townsend won on all four rinks, and by an overall score of 88 to 43.

There were no less than three excellent performances - those of Lorna Thomson, Ian Forster and Robbie Ransted with a convincing 22-11 outcome; Sandra White, John Oakey and Andy Scarborough, who won by 23-7, and Les Perkins, Nigel Whittle and Bob Lawrie who romped home by 27-11.

The St Albans and District fixture against the might of London Scottish was hosted by Townsend, in extremely sunny and hot conditions. Due to clashing commitments the Distruct numbers were somewhat depleted, but their hosts stepped in to make up six rinks.

The afternoon started with a “nearest the jack” competition, which resulted in the top prize, a bottle of Famous Grouse whisky, finding its way back to its homeland.  That, however, turned out to be the only win for the visiting team, as the DistrIct / Townsend won by an overall score of 137 shots to 75: and by six rinks to nil. Three Townsend rinks ended up being the highest scorers, with Brendhan Silke, Roger Potter and Andy Scarborough winning by 30-18; Gordon Clapworthy, Les Perkins and Alan Charran by 27-13 and top rink Phil Rayner, Ian Forster and Peter Thomson recording an impressive 25-6 win.

District Secretary, Mike Woodhams complimented the home club on its green as well as making special mention and thanks, for the excellent meal which had been enjoyed by all.
