The changing of the guard – Match Secretary role

As many of you will know, Sue Jones has now taken on the Match Secretary role.

In passing on to her the records dating back to October 1994 it’s been a real trip down memory lane to see all the matches that have taken place in the club over the years. Sadly, a number of our match players have died in the intervening 20 years, but there are a number whose names appeared then and are still playing for us today. Also some “opposition” players from 1994 are still giving us trouble today. (I won’t put their names on a website!)

My first match for the Club was with the late Sheila Sclater in January 2000 when we managed a draw against Brightwells A in the Premier Division (the Division our Ladies A team plays in this season) The other pair being Lesley Johnson and the late Margaret Ters. We both won one match and lost the other. I remember it well, as I was very nervous making my debut. Sheila helped me enormously with the tennis and tactics as a newcomer and subsequently handed over the Match Secretary role to me before she died.

Although the on-line system has now taken over, it’s really nice to have the books as a permanent record of the matches that have been played within the Club. I wonder how things will look in 2035 after the next 20 years? I know one thing, we should keep the old fashioned books!

It has been a privilege to look after the shop for the last 9 years and I wish Sue Jones every success in the role.
