What great feedback from a junior session held in the last week of the season

"Kim and her Bowls' team volunteered to provide an incredible afternoon for our small school group - teaching our children (with no prior knowledge of bowls) the basics of how to play and providing a great range of fun activities and competitions for the children to get involved in. The children (and adults!) had an amazing afternoon, so a huge thank you to everyone and Biddenden Bowls' Club from all of us! We hope to visit you again soon!'

Bowls is a sport which is suitable for all ages and at Biddenden Bowls Club we are keen to involve, engage and develop a dynamic junior section.

Bowls involves skill development, team work, decision making, precision, patience, challenges, exercise, fresh air and lots of fun. It can offer a very different sporting and social experience whether the junior plays other sports (such as squash, football, martial arts or tennis) or just wants to find a sport that is right for them.

Over Summer 2023, we will be offering a combination of coaching and activity sessions, junior competitions, awards and a fun tournament for our junior members. We will again be running junior coaching sessions on Sunday mornings from 10 to 11.30 (targeted at juniors aged 7 and over). The sessions will be adapted to take into account those taking part in terms of age, bowls experience and any individual needs.

The sessions will be run by a qualified coach with insurance and DBS clearance who will be assisted by club volunteers. The Club takes its safeguarding responsibilities very seriously.  We have systems in place to ensure activities at our club offer an enjoyable and safe experience for all in line with the Bowls England Safeguarding policy which the club has adopted. Our Safeguarding/Welfare Officer is Barbara Ellison.

Please let me know if you (your child)  would like to take part and become a junior member or if you would like more information. (Remember parents/carers are welcome to join as well!!)  Juniors can of course come along for an initial taster session.

Junior membership of the club costs just £7.50 in the first year for new bowlers or £15 for returning juniors. All activities will be run by our club coach and a team of volunteers in accordance with our Bowls England approved safeguarding procedures.

The club has a selection of bowls available and all bowlers need to bring along are some flat soled shoes (trainers), hat and a drink.

Biddenden Bowls Club Juniors

2023

1st June 2023

We welcomed 18 brownies and guides over 2 sessions accompanied by guide leader Mollie who we know from  Ashford Indoors Bowls Club. All of them were bowling and took part in a fun round robin game of pairs.

Open Day and Bowls Big Weekend

At both our open day at the end of April and on Bowls Big Weekend at the end of May it was great to welcome junior bowlers from age 2 upwards. All seemed to really enjoy the activities including the New Bowls Buddy Bowls!! It is great that 2 have returned to join us as junior members.

What happened in 2022?

We continued to build on the success of 2021 and all that we learned!! Sunday morning coaching sessions took place with real improvement seen in our those attending. 2 of our teenage juniors took part in senior club competitions/friendly matches.

Each year group at John Mayne Junior school came along for a bowling afternoon (4 sessions took place over May/June) and again we took part in the SRC Summer school.  We ran 7  sessions and welcomed 50+ young bowlers to the green.

On the 28th August we held our first ever Inter-Generational Family Tournament.. This was a fun pairs tournament open to all members (senior or junior) playing with another family member from a different generation e.g. daughter and Dad, son and Nan etc. (the partner does not need to be bowler/member) Everyone had at least 3 games and the day finished with a very competitive final ending in a tie!!

What happened in 2021?

We ran 5 coaching sessions on Sunday mornings form the end of July to Late August 2021. 7 juniors attended on one or more days aged 6 to 15.  Getting enthusiastic and talented juniors involved in this great game of bowls was a real delight.

This was a new development for Biddenden Bowls Club but after our sessions with John Mayne Junior School in 2019 and in the "Sports Route Coaching" Summer School in 2020, it was clear that bowls can provide a very different sporting and social experience for children and young people offering skill development, team work and competition.

The coaching sessions which took place on Sunday mornings from 10.00am to 11.30am were free and open to young people aged 5 to 17.

Our aim was to ensure that those who came along would have fun in a safe environment whilst developing bowls skills and an understanding of the sport.

The sessions were  run in line with the Club's and Bowls England's approved Safeguarding Policy and practices.

SPORTS ROUTE COACHING SUMMER SCHOOL 2021

26th to 30th July (5 sessions) and 16th to 20th August (6 sessions)

What a great couple of weeks we had. Welcomed 60 + different children to the green for lots of bowls related activities. 20 different members took part which was brilliant.

Activities included a spider, targets, skittles, bowls golf, grid and of course bowling to be nearest the jack. Saw some excellent bowling, lots of smiles and some real improvement over the sessions. Bring on 2022!!
