Tuesday 15th July

More success for Croquet Club members in the last few weeks

On Monday 7th July at Ripon Spa, Bob Strover won the Yorkshire Croquet Federation Open GC Singles title. A field of 12 players from Bishop Monkton, Bishop Auckland, Ripon, Sheffield, Middlesbrough and Pendle and Craven competed. In the end Bob won through to the final and defeated Michael Franklin from Ripon Spa.

Further success followed on Thursday 10th when Bob travelled to Nottingham for a National ‘B’ qualifier and again prevailed winning his second qualifying event of the series.

On the following weekend Chris Higgins also won his second qualifying event, this time in the National ‘A’ series at Hunstanton to add to his victory at Pendle in June.

Our ladies must also be mentioned. Jo-Ann Hughes reached the final of Ramsgate Ladies Open against a high quality field and Gill Brent reached the semi-final of Colchester Ladies Open.

Jo-Ann, Gill. Bob and Chris will compete in Chester in early August in the ‘A’ tournament.

Thursday 26th June

JILL BARRACLOUGH WINS NEW COMPETITION 

Chair of the Croquet Club Jill Barraclough has won the new Yorkshire Federation D’ Level competition .This level of tournament was introduced this year by Croquet England to encourage more people, playing more croquet and is seen as a natural progression from club play, through friendly matches and Federation matches to an introduction to tournament play.

The tournament attracted 6 players; 2 from Fylde; 2 from Ripon Spa and one each from Sheffield Parkhead and Bishop Monkton. The handicaps ranged from 10 to 14.

It was an all-play-all format. After 4 rounds Jill and Ted [Fylde] each had 4 wins and they met in round 5, where Jill got off to a strong start. Ted battled on, but never regained the lost ground. Jill won 7 – 4 to take the trophy. Ted and Barbara from Fylde came second and third.

BM WINS A FRIENDLY!

After a run of five successive defeats in their opening matches of the season, BM has won a friendly, beating Belsay from Northumberland by 114-110 in a closely fought match. The fixture was part of a tour by Belsay who also played games against Ripon, Pendle and Ben Rhydding.

Wednesday 18th June

MORE SUCCESS FOR BM PLAYERS AT REGIONAL AND NATIONAL LEVEL

Bishop Monkton have been crowned Doubles Champions of Yorkshire. in a competition at York on 18th June, Chris Higgins and Jo-Ann Hughes came first, with Bob Strover and Robb Wainwright also doing well, finishing third.

This follows recent achievements by the club's players who've qualified for national finals.

Chris Higgins has won the Pendle ‘A’ Level competition which gives him a place in the National ‘A’ Level Finals in Ryde in September.

And there are three national 'B' level qualifiers for Bishop Monkton as well.

Gill Brent won Chester 'B' and qualified for the finals in Budleigh Salterton alongside Jo-Ann Hughes and Bob Strover.

A great achievement for Gill, a faultless performance in a strong field of 16 in which she was seeded 11th.
