Table Tennis

The club was formed in 2011 and played initially for one session a week, quickly grew to a session every day other than Saturdays and plays every week of the year. Three 'old' tables were acquired to start the club but, as funds increased, old tables were replaced and better ones purchased until in 2021/22 professional and convenient models were in full use. Each year a table will be used for approximately 700 hours. Membership peaked at about 100 (pre Covid) and now stands at around 90.  About a quarter of members come from the village.

The Club meets at the Village Hall and its use of the facilities is high - over 400 sessions a year - each lasting for about two hours. There is an agreement that should any external organisation wish to book the Hall for a full booking, which would overlap with one of the regular sessions, then up to three times a year, a group can be asked to move to another day or time. The arrangement ensures booking fees for the Hall are not lost and this adaptability is reflected in the Club's payment to the Hall.

There are eight groups, each playing mainly doubles across three tables in the main hall.  A fourth table can be erected in the lounge for play, for using the practice machine or possibly for coaching. Standards vary a little across the groups and while competition can be keen, there is a high degree of fun and enjoyment.  The weekday groups all have a mid-session break for coffee and biscuits and a good chat.

A decision was made some time ago just to play socially (which doesn't mean it is not competitive, some will always be!) but there is no team in the local leagues.  The Sunday evening session mainly comprises of players who often play for a different club in the league, they play mostly singles and to a higher standard than the weekday groups.

New members are always welcome and are invited to try a session or two before committing to a membership subscription. Not every group will have a vacancy but if you would be interested in possibly joining a session, then please contact the chairman, Tony Essex, click to email  or Tel: 01423 887083/ 07899700603.

Within each group there is an appointed Group Leader who undertakes all of the weekly running of their group, they form part of the very infrequently meeting committee (usually twice per year) together with the Officials (Chair, Secretary, Treasurer) and representative on the Village Hall Management Committee.
