Match Reports 2017
Bloxham lost on 3 rinks with one drawn in their friendly against Banbury Borough. Jim Lucas’s rink lost 14-24, Tony Gardner’s lost 7-19 and Dave Morse’s lost 13-19. Ron Higgins rink drew 15-15.
WOMTL – Witney Town Aces
Bloxham lost 2-1 on rinks with one drawn in their West Oxford League match against Witney Town Aces. Alan Miles’ and Brian Smith’s teams lost 7-24 and 11-21 respectively but Tony Gardner’s team won 23-11 and Ray Hopkins team drew 14-14.
Bloxham beat Banbury Central in their mixed friendly 3-1 and by 70-65. Dave Morse, Diane Billington, Rob Kearvell and Alan Round won 18-14, Ray Hopkins, Doug Woodward, Sue Miles and Brian Smith won 20-16, Alan Miles, Chris Hall, Roy Billington and Norman Hambidge won 23-12. Ron Higgins, John Price, Jane Hall and John Stephens lost 9-23.
WOMTL - Chipping Norton
Ray Hopkins with Brian Smith and Jane Hall, lost 17-19. Pat Ostler with Hilary Thomas and Doug Woodward lost 14- 17. Alan Miles with Rod Ostler and Jenny Wilde won 21- 17. John Stephens with Sue Miles and Chris Hall won 21-13. Bloxham won 73-66 on points but drew on rinks.
League – Woodstock
In the last league game of the season despite losing 3-1 on rinks Bloxham beat Woodstock by 85-83 and took the winning match points. Dave Morse with Doug Woodward, Des Jones and Norman Hambidge lost 15-22, Ron Higgins with John Elstob, Chris Hall and Rob Kearvell lost 18-26 and Alan Miles with Simon Wratten, Alan Round and John Stephens lost 22-25. The winning rink was led by Tony Gardner with Brian Smith, Roy Billington and Ray Hopkins who had a resounding 30-10 win.
Bloxham played Woodfdord-cum-Membris in a triples friendly and won 3-1 on rinks and 75-55. Tony Gardner with Ros Sopp and Simon Hambidge won 26-7, Alan Miles with Hilary Thomas and Norman Hambidge won 27-16 and Brian Smith with Doug Woodward and Sue Miles won a close game 14-13. Rob Kearvell with Ray Sopp and Rod Ostler lost 8-19.
Bloxham won their friendly match against Oxford Masonic 4-0 and 116-56. John Stephens rink won 35-16, Alan Round 24-14, Ron Higgins 21-18 and Alan Miles 36-08.
League – Thame
Bloxham’s final away game was to league leaders Thame where they beat them 2-1 on rinks with one drawn game but lost overall by 76 to 87. Alan Miles with Doug Woodward, Chris Hall and Norman Hambidge suffered a heavy loss by 10-29. John Stephens with Ray Sopp, Simon Hambidge and Simon Wratten won a close game 21-18, while Tony Gardner with Brian Smith, John Nolan and Roy Billington were held to a drew on the last end 23-23. Ron Higgins with John Elstob, Des Jones and Rob Kearvell despite never being behind were almost overtaken but held on to win 22-17 on the last end.
Bloxham lost in their friendly match away to FISC, Stratford, by 3 rinks to 1 and by 50 to 71. Ray Hopkins rink lost 11-22, John Stephens 11-16 and Tony Gardner 10-20. The winning rink was Alan Miles 19-13.
League – South Oxford
Bloxham beat South Oxford in their return home match having lost the away game. Bloxham won on 2 rinks lost one and drew one and the score was 78-70. Alan Miles rink with Des Jones, Simon Hambidge and John Stephens despite trailing for much of the match won by taking one point on the last end for a score of 18-17. Dave Morse with Doug Woodward, Chris Hall and Norman Hambidge drew 15 all. Ron Higgins with Ray Sopp, John Nolan and Alan Round lost 14-27 and Tony Gardner with Brian Smith, Roy Billington and Ray Hopkins had a good win 31-11despite their opponents leading after 10 ends.
WOMTL – Burford
In Bloxham’s away game at Burford they lost on 2 rinks and drew on the other two but lost heavily on points 67-82. Ray Hopkins with Diane Billington and Doug Woodward lost 15-20 but Brian Smith with Ros Sopp and Des Jones drew 20-20 and Roy Billington with Jenny Wilde and Ray Sopp also drew 19-19 despite leading until the last end when a 5 secured the draw for Burford. John Stephens with John Price and Hilary Thomas lost 13-23.
League – OUP
Bloxham won their away match at OUP 77-67 with it drawn 2-2 on rinks. Tony Garner with Brian Smith, Roy Billington and Ray Hopkins lost 17-19, and Jim Lucas with Des Jones, John Nolan and John Stephens also lost 12-19. Dave Morse with Doug Woodward, Chris Hall and Norman Hambidge had a good 29-13 win and Ron Higgins with Ray Sopp, John Elstob and Alan Miles won 19-16.
Ladies v Chestnuts Ladies
Bloxham Ladies played Chestnuts Ladies in a friendly match at Bloxham and won 2-1 on rinks and 52-35 on points. Pat Ostler with Jenny Wilde and Hilary Thomas won 26-10 and Norma Gardner with Ros Sopp and Sue Miles won 16-11. Anne Kearvell with Jane Hall and Diane Billington lost a close game 10-14.
OBA men’s and ladies
In the last of three special games to mark the 60th Anniversary of the club, Bloxham entertained a side from Bowls Oxfordshire mens and ladies on Sunday. The home side won two rinks and drew one but in a very close game, the county visitors came out on top winning 77-79.
League – Oxford City & County
Bloxham beat City & County by 3-1 on rinks and by 102-60. Tony Gardner with Brian Smith, Roy Billington and Ray Hopkins led all the way to win 30-11as did Dave Morse with Doug Woodward, Simon Wratten and Norman Hambidge to win 34-11. Ron Higgins with Ray Sopp, John Nolan and Alan Miles led all the way and were nearly caught at the end but held on to win 21-20. Jim Lucas with Des Jones, Rob Kearvell and John Stephens took a good lead but got caught on the last few ends to lose 17-18.
Bloxham played Adderbury in an enjoyable match to celebrate Bloxham’s 60th Anniversary, the club being formed in July 1957. In the match Bloxham lost 1-3 and 68 to 87. Alan Miles with Jenny Wilde, Diane Billington and Norman Hambidge gained Bloxham’s only win 21-14. Ron Higgins with Ray Sopp, Hilary Thomas and Roy Billington just lost 22-23, Brian Smith with Doug Woodward, John Price and Sue Miles lost 13-22 and Ray Hopkins with Ros Sopp, Des Jones and Alan Round lost 12-28.
In their friendly match with Byfield Bloxham won on 3 rinks with the fourth drawn and won on points 96-60. Brian Smith’s rink with Ray Sopp, Hilary Thomas and Simon Hambidge won 33-11, Alan Miles with Ros Sopp, Chris Hall and Norman Hambidge won 28-17 and Ray Hopkins with Jane Hall, Simon Wratten and Rob Kearvell won 18-15. Ray Billington’s rink with John Price, Doug Woodward and Anne Kearvell drew 17-17.
League, West Oxford
Bloxhams lost their return match with West Oxford 1½ to 4½ and by 61 to 79. Ron Higgins with Ray Sopp, John Nolan and Alan Miles lost 16-22, but Tony Gardner with Brian Smith, Roy Billington and Ray Hopkins won a close game 17-16. Dave Morse with Doug Woodward, John Elstob and Norman Hambidge drew 20-20 but Jim Lucas with Des Jones, Rob Kearvell and John Stephens were soundly beaten 8-21.
Bowls England Presidents Invitation
As part of the club’s 60th Anniversary celebrations Bloxham played a Bowls England Presidents Invitation team on 27 June. Bloxham drew on one rink, won on one and lost on 2 but lost heavily on points 66-91, however this did not detract from the enjoyment both teams had during the match and at the dinner afterwards. John Stephens with Des Jones, Hilary Thomas and Norman Hambidge drew 17-17 despite trailing until the last end. Pat Ostler with Chris Hall, Doug Woodward and Alan Miles won 20-14. Tony Gardner with Jane Hall, John Nolan and Rob Kearvell lost 20-28 and Dave Morse with Ray Sopp, Anne Kearvell and Brian Smith lost 9-32.
Bloxham played Hanborough in a friendly match on Sunday and despite winning 3-1 on rinks lost the game on points, 78-84. Dave Morse with Des Jones, Sue Miles and Brian Smith trailed throughout their match but won on the last end, 18-17, getting the one point to secure the win. Ray Hopkins with John Elstob, Peter Wood and Rob Kearvell were Bloxhams loosing rink, 16-28. Alan Miles, John Price, Chris Hall and Hilary Thomas were nearly caught at the end but won 23-22 on the last end. John Stephens with Jenny Wilde, playing her first game for Bloxham, Doug Woodward and Rob Kearvell won 21-17.
League – Woodstock
In their away game to Woodstock both teams won 2 rinks but Bloxham won as narrowly as you can get on points by 72 to 71. Ron Higgins rink with Chris Hall, Simon Hambidge and Rob Kearvell lost 15-21. Dave Morse with Doug Woodward, Simon Wratten and Norman Hambidge won 22-12 as did Tony Gardner with Brian Smith, Roy Billington and Ray Hopkins staging a fightback over the last 5 ends to win 23-15. Alan Miles with Des Jones, John Nolan and John Stephens lost 12-23.
WOMTL – Charlbury
In their home WOMT League match to Charlbury the teams drew 2 all on rinks but Bloxham lost on points by 69-80. John Stephens with Sue Miles and Norman Hambidge lost 15-22, but Tony Gardner with Doug Woodward and Pat Ostler won narrowly by 17-14, Alan Miles with Ros Sopp and Simon Wratten lost heavily by 12-31 but Ray Hopkins with Ray Sopp and Hilary Thomas had a god win by 25-13.
Bloxham played at home to Thame in the Oxford League for the first time for several years and lost 3-1 and 70-92 on points. Tony Gardner with Brian Smith, John Nolan and Alan Miles lost 18-22, but Jim Lucas with Ray Sopp, Rob Kearvell and John Stephens just won 22-21. Dave Morse with Doug Woodward, Simon Wratten and Norman Hambidge lost narrowly 19-21 whilst Ray Hopkins with Des Jones, John Elstob and Ron Higgins lost 11-28.
Bloxhams friendly with Banbury Borough at home resulted in Bloxham winning 2 rinks to 1 with one drawn and winning on points 83-80. Tony Gardner with Rob Kearvell, Simon Hambidge and Norman Hambidge won 23-19, Alan Miles with Simon Wratten, John Nolan and Brian Smith lost 24-30 despite scoring a maximum 8 on one end, but Jim Lucas with Des Jones, Rod Ostler and Alan Round won a close match 16-11. Ray Hopkins with Ray Sopp, Doug Woodward and John Stephens drew 20-20.
League, South Oxford
Bloxham narrowly lost to South Oxford B team in their league match with each team winning two rinks but South Oxford winning on points by 78 to 80. Despite the close points score the individual game had some large score differences. Tony Gardner’s rink with Brian Smith, Roy Billington and Ray Hopkins won 23-16 coming through to win on the last 4 ends. Dave Morse with Doug Woodward, Simon Hambidge and Norman Hambidge lost 11-30 but Jim Lucas’s rink with John Elstob, Ray Sopp and John Stephens won 32-11. Alan Miles with Des Jones, Rob Kearvell and Ron Higgins lost 12-23.
Bloxham gained their first league win of the season against a depleted OUP side winning on all 4 rinks and by 96 to 48.5. Tony Gardners rink with Brian Smith, John Nolan and Ray Hopkins won 22-17, Jim Lucas with Simon Wratten, Alan Round and Ron Higgins won 32-9, Alan Miles with Des Jones, Simon Hambidge and Norman Hambidge won 23-15 and Dave Morse with Doug Woodward, Rob Kearvell and John Stephens won 19-7.5.
League, Oxford City & County
Bloxham suffered their second Oxon Bowls League defeat despite winning on two rinks. But a heavy 44-6 defeat for John Stephens cost Bloxham against Oxford City & County B in Thursday’s division four fixture. Superb bowling from Brian Smith, Roy Billington and Ray Hopkins ensured Tony Gardner’s rink won 28-17 while Dave Morse with Doug Woodward, John Price and Rob Kearvell were also successful with a 16-13 win. After leading early on, Alan Miles’ four lost 16-22
Bloxham finished strongly in their mixed friendly triples fixture at Wellesbourne, winning on all four rinks. Alan Miles’ triple of Hilary Thomas and Doug Woodward led the way with a 20-11 success they were well supported by Sue Miles, Simon Wratten and Brian Smith with a 18-13 win. There were also wins for Norman Hambidge with Chris Hall and Anne Kearvell, who won 18-16, and Ray Hopkins with Jane Hall and Rob Kearvell, who won 20-17.
Bloxham overcame neighbours Adderbury in their local derby recording a 77-55 win. Bloxham were successful on 3 of the 4 rinks, with Ray Hopkins four of Ray Sopp, Diane Billington, and Rob Kearvell leading the way with a 21-10 win. Hopkins was well supported by Ron Higgins rink of Chris Hall, John Elstob and Tony Gardner who won 23-15 and Alan Miles rink of Anne Kearvell, Roy Billington and Norman Hambidge who won 18-9. Bloxhams only defeat was Simon Wrattens four with Sue Miles, Doug Woodward and Brian Smith who went down to Adderburys rink of Cliff Hall 15-21.
South Oxford – League Cup
Our first match of the season was in the knockout Oxfordshire League Cup at home against South Oxford. Bloxham won 3-1 on rinks and by 77 to 54 and now progress to playing Watlington away next week. Alan Miles’ team with Des Jones, Chris Hall and Rob Kearvell won 20-10, Tony Gardner’s team with Brian Smith, Rod Ostler and Ray Hopkins won 19-16, Jim Lucas with Ray Sopp, John Elstob and Ron Higgins lost 12-17, and Dave Morse with Doug Woodward, Norman Hambidge and John Stephens won 26-11
