Why Friendship Matters

In Maidstone, around 35,000 residents are aged 65 and over, with the largest growth seen in people aged 70 and above over the past decade. As people live longer, many also face changes such as bereavement, reduced mobility, or health issues, which can quietly reduce
everyday contact with others. Loneliness and social isolation are recognised as serious concerns in later life, with research showing that many people over 65 experience prolonged periods of loneliness, which can affect both mental and physical health. Staying socially connected helps people feel valued, supported, and involved in life, which is why opportunities to build friendships and remain part of a community are so important as we age.
