Bonfire Guidelines

If a bonfire is a necessity then please follow the guidelines:

  • When lighting a bonfire, only burn dry material.
  • Damp vegetation does not burn well producing large volumes of smoke which can smoulder for long periods of time.
  • Reduce complaints by disposing of damp vegetation in different ways.
  • Aim to let your neighbours know when your have a bonfire, including patio fires in the summer months.
  • Avoid bonfires when your neighbours have washing outside or inform them so they can bring it in.
  • Give your neighbours opportunity to close their windows.
  • Never burn household rubbish, rubber tyres, anything containing plastic, painted materials, plywood and chipboard, foam or paint.
  • Never use old engine oil, meths or petrol to light the fire or encourage it.
  • Avoid lighting a fire in unsuitable weather conditions - when it is too windy or still or when it is damp as smoke can hang in the air or get blown into neighbours gardens and homes.
  • Never leave the fire unattended or leave it to smoulder - put it out.
  • Bonfires held on commercial or industrial premises that gives rise to dark smoke are an offence that can result in a fine and court action.
