Members are invited to join us to continue work by the Group to document and photograph St Mary’s Church graveyard. Sue Rose will lead the work.                                                              

More Thoughts of an Exbourne Maid - Margaret Weeks 7.30p.m.  

Margaret wrote a book in 2006 about her life in Exbourne. Her talk will be about some of the memories not included but since remembered.

5th June Our Group’s Queen’s Jubilee Exhibition in the Village Hall                                 

 This exhibition will be to celebrate events in Exbourne during the 70 years of the Queen’s reign.  12.30p.m.

21st June   Group visit to Tapeley Park Gardens, near Instow      

Tapeley Park is renowned for its beautiful gardens in particular the Italian terraces and include a lake, ponds and old woodland. Details tbc

19th July     Tollhouses and Milestones of Devon – Tim Jenkinson.  

Tim has a wealth of knowledge and information about the toll houses and Turnpikes of Devon. The toll houses, small buildings on the highway edge, were lived in by the pike-men, who collected tolls used for the maintenance of the roads. 

16th August Paul Rendell - A History Walk at Meldon 7pm.                                      

 Paul will lead us on a 11/2 hour walk looking at the industrial history of North Dartmoor. This is a repeat of the walk in 2021 and prioritywill be given to those who could not be included last year (Max 15)

20th September Dr Todd Gray – The Art of the Devon Garden                                   

 This talk traces how the art of gardening has developed from earliest times to the present day. Illustrated by a wealth of images  some created on glass, pottery, fabric, wood and stone also paper and canvas. It will be a fascinating look at current and vanished gardens too. 18th Oct   Lydford and the Stannary Towns  -  Simon Dell     Lydford Law not only became a Dartmoor Tradition, its fame spread nationwide and became synonymous for meaning ‘unfair justice’. In Tudor Times if anyone was unfortunate enough to be thrown into Lydford Gaol, they could expect to be hung before they were judged! This talk is the interesting story of the Dartmoor Tinners.                                                                                                                                                                                    15th Nov The ACE Moistown Project – Janet Daynes. The Project started in 2008. Although most of the site was covered with scrub, the earthworks, at Moistown, as well as  medieval and post medieval settlements showed a lot of potential for further work, dowsing and geophysical surveys followed. This talk details the archeological project up to 2022.

17th Jan Paul Rendell - Okehampton in Postcards.  Paul has an enormous collection of old postcards of this area. His illustrated talk will show a pictorial history of Okehampton. (Paul Rendell Book Shop)

21st Feb Alan Endacott – The History of Stained Glass

Alan was previously curator of the Museum of Dartmoor Life and also worked for English heritage in Cornwall, before deciding to retrain as a stained-glass artist and restorer. Trading as Angel Stained Glass, he has worked on commissions throughout Devon, including parish churches and chapels as well municipal and commercial developments and repairs at National Trust properties and the Cathedral. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience about stained glass in Devon, which he will draw on for his talk.                          

 21st Mar The AGM and A Group Research Report - Sue Rose   Sue will talk about the different types of material that provide information about the history of Exbourne and its people and will reveal some of the pitfalls and challenges that have been encountered.
