Voices Across the Sea – Anglo-German Evening Comes to St Mary’s

St Mary’s Arts Centre will welcome singers from Germany and Kent on Saturday 31 October for Voices Across the Sea – An Anglo-German Evening of Vocal Harmony, a special evening of music celebrating friendship across the Channel.

Heading the programme is the award-winning German male voice choir Männerchor Osthelden, performing music ranging from Schubert and Brahms to traditional and international songs. They will be joined by the award-winning British close-harmony group The August Knights, bringing a very different sound with show tunes and modern popular music, and local ensemble With Cheerful Voice, singing English part songs.

The evening is directed by Sandwich Honfleur Twinning Association member and town guide Phil Price, whose connection with Männerchor Osthelden began when he was leading the choir on a tour of Sandwich — during which they memorably broke into song in St Clement’s Church.

The event reflects the international friendships that have long connected Sandwich with continental Europe. It is supported by The Arts Society Sandwich, The Arts Society Dover, Deal & Sandwich, Sandwich History Society, Sandwich Honfleur Twinning Association and, appropriately for an evening with a strong German flavour, Sandwich Sonsbeck Twinning Association.

The evening also has an important local purpose. Funds raised will support Friends of St Mary’s and the programme of improvements planned for this remarkable Grade I listed building. St Mary’s is a major local venue for concerts, exhibitions, talks, school activities, community events and charitable fundraising, but its facilities need investment if it is to fulfil that role properly for the future.

Saturday 31 October — doors open at 6.30pm. Admission is £10, with a bar and food available.

Join us for a varied evening of music from both sides of the sea — and help support the future of St Mary’s.
