Frome Selwood played the club finals last week. In the Ladies Championship the winner was Kathy Kingman with Susan Simenton runner-up. The Men’s Championship saw Malcolm Dawkins come out on top over Mike Mason. In the Ladies 2 wood singles Sandra Dowie beat Bev Tymus by just one shot and the Men’s 2 wood also ended with Steve Chant just beating Mike Geake by one shot. The mixed triples saw Vera & Ray Ashman and David James triumph over Graham Atkinson, Sandra Hinvest and Nigel Fricker. The Ladies Pairs saw some excellent shots from both teams with Sandra Hinvest & Susan Simenton just finishing ahead of Bev Tymus and Sandra Dowie. The winners of the Men’s 2 wood pairs were Graham Atkinson & Chris Mitchell with Colin Hinvest & Mike Geake runners-up. Steve Chant won the Mixed Handicap with Brian Reed runner-up. The Men’s 4 wood pairs and the Ladies Invitation match could not be played but will be held at the beginning of next year’s season.
Closing day was on the Saturday and was won by the Captain’s side. The ‘spider’ was won by Anne Kirk.
Harvest Supper will be on Monday 7th. October @ 7 o’ciock in the clubhouse.

The combined Frome Park/Selwood team were winners of the Annual Charity Floodlit League by 3 rinks to 2 away to Norwest. This year’s charity being ‘Helping Henry’ and can be found at www.justgiving.com and then search for ‘Helping Henry’.
On the same evening Selwood were away to Blue Circle for a mixed friendly but came off second best, losing on all rinks.
However, in another mixed friendly at home to Frome Park, Selwood won on two rinks to come out on top 75-49. Elaine Gilburt, Rosa Pearce, Peter Simenton and Brian Reed finished 20-7; Graham Atkinson, Sophie Prandy, Ray Ashman and Bev Tymus went even better finishing 30-11 which included three 4’s, a 5 and a 6.

In the SCL Frome Selwood had two good results. At home to Bath C all 12 points were taken in a 70-43 win. Scores:- Jeff Clapp, Bob Norris, Nigel Fricker, Mike Geake 16-13; Mike Mason, Mike Bishop, David James, Steve Chant 24-18; Chris Mitchell, Ray Ashman, Duncan McGovern 30-12. Away to Bloomfield B 8 points were gained in a close 62-59 finish thanks mainly to Terry Joyce, B. Norris, R. Ashman and D. McGovern 31-14. This win means that Selwood have won all 10 games played in Somerset Division 2 east and are the 2019 Champions.
In the MSL Mixed at home to Fosseway the points were shared as heavy rain made any play impossible.
The ladies had mixed fortunes in their league. At home to Frome Park in a 42-54 defeat just 2 points were gained thanks to Elaine Gilburt, Bev Tymus and Jean Lemon 15-11. In a rearranged game at home to Prattens 4 points were taken in a close 54-59 finish. Best rinks:- Rosa Pearce, Vera Ashman, Jean Lemon 21-16; Elaine, Sandra Dowie, Bev 19-17. And at home to Norwest 11 points. were picked up in a 64-40 finish. Rink scores:- Elaine, Vera A. Kathy Kingman 26-11; Sandra Hinvest, Vera Ford, Susan Simenton 21-12; Lesley Hill, Sandra D., Bev drew on 17.

Frome Selwood had another ‘up & down’ week with the men losing out at Bath in the MSL Semi-final with only the rink of Chris Mitchell, Peter Simenton, David James and Steve Chant victorious on 22-9.
A better result at home to Keynsham C in the SCL saw Selwood pick up 9 points in a 69-58 finish. The best rink was Mike Mason, P. Simenton, D. James, S. Chant 35-16, while Nick Greening, Ken Matthews, Percy Reynolds and Brian Lye drew on 18.
In the MSL Mixed Selwood could not find their form at Castle Cary with only one rink getting any points. Lesley Hill, Ray Ashman, Nigel Fricker, Mike Geake finishing 19-9.
The ladies fared better in their league match at home to Street taking all 12 points in a 51-35 win. Rink scores:- Vera Ashman, Lesley Hill, Kathy Kingman 20-13; Sandra Hinvest, Vera Ford, Susan Simenton 16-11; Elaine Gilburt, Jean Lemon, Bev Tymus 15-11. And a two rink friendly at home to Trowbridge Westbourne resulted in a close 39-33 win for Selwood. Vera A., Liz Dawkins, Kathy 21-16; Jean Steeds, Elaine, Sandra Dowie 18-17.
The draw for the Club Triples has been made and the games will be played on Saturday 10 August with the final at the end of September.

Frome Selwood ladies had a disastrous game away to Street with no points gained and only fared slightly better at home to Purnell with 2 points taken thanks to Sandra Hinvest, Vera Ford and Susan Simenton 14-9. However, at Wyrrel Park they regained their form and pride with a 43-29 win taking all 12 points. Rink scores:- Vera Ashman, Jean Lemon, Bev Tymus 13-7; Elaine Gilburt, Sandra Dowie, Kathy Kingman 15-11; S. Hinvest, V. Ford, S. Simenton 15-11.
The men travelled to Purnell in the MSL and picked up 10 points despite winning on just the one rink:- Nick Greening, Ray Ashman, Percy Reynolds, Duncan McGovern finishing 23-11. The other rinks managed to keep the deficit low enough for Selwood to win by just three shots 65-62.
The SCL saw Knowle C come to the Butts Hill green and unfortunately having to play two triples although this did not really affect the overall outcome with Selwood finishing 89-38 and taking all 12 points. Scores:- Jeff Clapp, Peter Simenton, David James, Steve Chant 31-13; N. Greening, Ken Matthews, Brian Lye, D. McGovern 32-16; R. Ashman, Bob Norris, Nigel Fricker, Mike Geake 26-9.

Frome Selwood ladies lost their league game away at City of Wells, going down on all rinks. But recovered to win away to Frome Park 49-38 and collect 10 points. At the halfway stage Selwood were just 3 shots behind but then the rink of Rosa Pearce, Bev Tymus and Jean Lemon ‘made a dash for the tape’ to triumph 20-9. The other two rinks both drew: Liz Dawkins, Vera Ashman, Kathy Kingman on 15, and Sandra Hinvest, Sandra Dowie, Vera Ford on 14.
The men lost out to Alexandra in the Wedmore Plate by just 6 shots but kept up their good form in the leagues. At home to Prattens in the MSL 14 points were picked up in a 66-54 finish. Rink scores:-Nick Greening, Ken Matthews, Percy Reynolds, Duncan McGovern 24-15; Jeff Clapp, Peter Simenton, David James, Steve Chant 16-10; Graham Atkinson, Peter Collis, Brian Lye, Brian Reed 14-13. At Fosseway in the SCL Selwood took all 12 points 79-36. Scores:- Greening, Lye, Reynolds, McGovern 29-7; Terry Joyce, Ray Ashman, Nigel Fricker, Mike Geake 30-12; Atkinson, Simenton, James and Chant were 13-5 behind after ten ends but fought back to win 20-16.

Frome Selwood continue to do well in their league matches; in the MSL at Fosseway they picked up 14 points in an 82-56 finish. Best rinks:- Colin Hinvest, Peter Simenton, David James, Steve Chant 28-15; Nick Greening, Ken Matthews, Brian Lye, Nigel Fricker 22-10; Graham Atkinson, Mike Bishop, Ray Ashman, Brian Reed 20-16. And in the SCL, also away to Alexandra B, 10 points were taken 68-51. Rink scores:- Terry Joyce, Bob Norris, N. Fricker, Mike Geake 35-7; N. Greening, Percy Reynolds, B. Lye, Duncan McGovern 22-15.
However, in the Turnbull Cup Selwood were well beaten by Frome Park and will meet Alexandra in the Wedmore Plate. A little bit of pride was regained in a friendly against Park with Selwood winning 82-70. Best rinks:- Ann Muise, Tony Lemon, C. Hinvest, P. Reynolds 26-13; T. Joyce, Lee Yearley, B. Norris, M. Frome Selwood’s fixtures list was rather depleted last week due to withdrawals from the league or the opposition not being able to get a full team.
Consequently the ladies played just the one league game at home to City of Wells, with both clubs winning one rink and one drawn. At the halfway stage Selwood were 10 shots adrift but fought back well to level the score on 41 shots apiece, both clubs receiving 6 points. Rink scores:- Rosa Pearce, Vera Ford, Susan Simenton 14-13; Angie Bishop, Elaine Gilburt, Kathy Kingman 12 all; Vera Ashman, Jean Lemon, Bev Tymus 15-16.
The only other match was a mixed friendly at home to Trowbridge Town resulting in a narrow 79-74 win for Selwood. Winning rinks:- Jack Prandy, Malcom Dawkins, Vera Ford, David James 26-15; Graham Atkinson, Rosa Pearce, Jean Lemon, Mike Geake 23-17. Percy Reynolds

Frome Selwood men were successful in taking all of the points in both of their league games. In the MSL at home to Norwest a 71-47 victory gained them 16pnts. Rink scores:- Graham Atkinson, Ken Matthews, Percy Reynolds, Nigel Fricker 20-10;Jeff Clapp, Mike Bishop, Brian Lye, Mike Mason 16-13; Terry Joyce, Colin Hinvest, Malcolm Dawkins, Mike Geake 18-13; Nick Greening, Peter Collis, Ray Ashman, Steve Chant 17-11.
In the SCL they were away to Weston Bath B. After 10 ends Selwood were well ahead on 36-19 with 2 rinks comfortably ahead and the third evenly matched. However, Weston rallied on 2 rinks and came close to winning on both but Selwood kept calm to finish ahead. Rink scores:- N. Greening, Bob Norris, P. Reynolds, Duncan McGovern 32-14; T. Joyce, Peter Simenton, David James, S. Chant 19-18; G. Atkinson, K. Matthews, R. Ashman, M. Geake 18-17. Total score 69-49 taking 12 points.
The ladies sadly did not fare so well. Despite having previously taken all the points when away at Shepton Mallet, the tables were turned at home with Shepton winning on all rinks. Selwood’s best rink was that of Angie Bishop, Elaine Gilburt and Kathy Kingman who, despite being 10-0 down after 9 ends fought back to just miss out 13-14. And a friendly away to Keynsham saw only one winning rink: Sandra Hinvest, Rosa Pearce and Vera Ford 16-15.

Frome Selwood’s good run in the MSL suffered a slight blip against Purnell by losing 51-77 and only gaining 2 points thanks to Mick Ridgard, Brian Denness, Malcolm Dawkins, Mike Geake 17-13.
However, a better result was obtained in the Mixed League away to neighbours Frome Park with Selwood picking up 10 points in a 53-46 win. Winning rinks:- Colin Hinvest, Vera Ashman, Percy Reynolds, Kathy Kingman 16-10; Jeff Clapp, Jean Steeds, Nigel Fricker, Brian Reed 20-14.

Frome Selwood men had another good result in the MSL away to Prattens taking 12 points in a close 75-68 finish. Winning rink scores:- Nick Greening, Bob Norris, Percy Reynolds, Duncan McGovern 31-6; Jeff Clapp, Ken Matthews, Brian Lye, Mike Mason 20-17.
However, two days later Prattens had their revenge in the MSL Mixed when they nabbed all the points.
The men welcomed Bloomfield to Butts Hill for a 3 rink friendly and managed to win 61-47. Rink scores:- Graham Atkinson, Peter Shepherd, Peter Simenton, Mike Geake 23-13; N. Greening, Lee Yearley, P. Reynolds, Ray Ashman 18-14; Colin Hinvest, Malcolm Dawkins, Nigel Fricker, B. Lye 20 all.
Greening, Reynolds & McGovern won their National Triples against Severills from Crewkerne.
The ladies’ only league match was postponed due to bad weather, but Jean Lemon, Susan Simenton and Kathy Kingman beat Long Ashton 18-12 in the County Triples.

Frome Selwood men continued to do well in the MSL with a 75-57 victory at Paulton and picking up 14 points. Winning rinks:- Colin Hindvest, Ray Ashman, Percy Reynolds, Duncan McGovern 25-13; Malcolm Dawkins, Peter Simenton, David James, Steve Chant 19-13; Graham Atkinson, Ken Matthews, Brian Lye, Mike Mason 16-14. And at home to Fosseway 13pnts. were gained in an 88-59.5 win. ( One Fosseway rink being a man short had it’s score reduced by 25% ) Rink scores:- Hinvest, Simenton, James, Chant 31-10.5; Terry Joyce, Bob Norris, Nigel Fricker, Mike Geake 20-11; Dawkins, Mick Ridgard, Ashman, Brian Reed drew with 19 shots.
The ladies had no league games other than the MSL Mixed where they contributed to a 56-39 win at Wyrral Park taking 11pnts. Scores:- Vera Ashman, Susan Simenton, N. Fricker, M. Mason 24-12; T. Joyce, Jean Lemon, D. James, M. Geake 15-10; Lesley Hill, P. Simenton, R. Ashman, Kathy Kingman 17 all.
A mixed 6 rink friendly against a Richmond & Barnes Bowling Association touring side saw the visitors win on 4 rinks but losing by 2 shots over all in an 88-86 finish. The game was declared drawn.

The Ladies had a slight hiccup in the league against Castle Cary, with only 2 points taken thanks to Sandra Dowie, Bev Tymus and Jean Lemon 17-15. However they regained their form for the next three games. At Paulton they took 10pnts. in a 58-44 win. Best rinks:- Sandra Hindvest, Vera Ford, Susan Simenton 23-8; Angie Bishop, Bev, Kathy Kingman 22-13. And at Shepton Mallet all 12pnts. were gleaned from a 51-34 result. Rink scores:- Vera Ashman, Ann Muise, Kathy 16-12; Sandra H., Vera F., Susan 15-13; Sandra D., Bev, Jean Lemon 20-9. Also away, this time at Prattens, a 52-45 result meant another 10pnts. were collected. Winning rinks:- Jean Steeds, Ann, Jean L. 20-13; Lesley Hill, Elaine Gilburt, Kathy 21-13. In the County 4’s Vera A., Jean L., Susan & Kathy won their first two games: 24-21 against Bath and then beating Purnell 27-20.
In the MSL the men took 12 points in a 72-60 win at Norwest. Winning rinks:- Graham Atkinson, Colin Hindvest, Peter Simenton, Mike Geake 31-10; Terry Joyce, Malcolm Dawkins, Ray Ashman, Brian Lye 16-15.
The SCL also brought good results. Against Purnell C an 85-39 victory gained Selwood all 12pnts. Scores:- Nick Greening, Percy Reynolds, Nigel Fricker, Duncan McGovern 28-10; Jeff Clapp, P. Simenton, David James, Steve Chant 32-18; T. Joyce, Bob Norris, B. Lye, Mike Mason 25-11. At Paulton 10pnts. were collected in an 83-65 win. Best rinks:- N. Greening, R. Ashman, N. Fricker, D. McGovern 41-21; G. Atkinson, P. Simenton, D. James, S. Chant 25-19.
On the downside Selwood’s first MSL Mixed match ended in a disappointing 32-62 thrashing against Street who took all the points.

With opening day and some warm up friendlies over the new season has started in earnest.
The Ladies began their league matches with a 58-46 win away at Purnell, taking 10 points. Winning rinks:- Angie Bishop, Ann Muise, Kathy Kingman 26-17; Sandra Hindvist, Vera Ford, Susan Simenton 19-11.
Against Castle Cary though, only 2pnts. were salvaged thanks to Sandra Dowie, Bev Tymus, Jean Lemon 17-15. Their form returned at Paulton where 10 more points were gained in a 58-44 win down to Sandra H, Vera F, Susan 23-8; Angie B, Bev, Kathy 22-13.
