The UK's traditional analogue telephone network is being replaced with digital technology. The change, often referred to as the Digital Switchover or Digital Voice, is expected to be completed by January 2027.

Many households in Northumberland have already been moved to digital services, but some residents may still be contacted by their telephone provider over the coming months.

What will change?

For most people:

  • You will keep your existing telephone number.
  • There is no charge for the standard switchover.
  • Most existing telephones will continue to work.
  • Your provider will contact you before any changes take place.

If you have broadband, your telephone will usually plug into your broadband router rather than the traditional telephone socket.

If you only have a landline

If you do not have broadband, you will not be forced to take a broadband package. Providers will continue to offer dedicated landline services for customers who only need a telephone.

Support for vulnerable residents

Telephone providers have arrangements in place to support customers who rely on their landline, including those who use telecare equipment or have additional needs.

Support may include:

  • Free engineer visits.
  • Battery backup where appropriate.
  • Alternative solutions for customers who have poor or no mobile coverage.

If you or someone you know relies on a landline for medical or care reasons, it is important to tell your telephone provider before the switchover takes place.

Power cuts

Digital landlines work differently from traditional phone lines and may not continue to operate during a power cut unless suitable backup equipment has been provided.

If you are concerned about this, particularly if you rely on your landline in an emergency, contact your telephone provider to discuss the support available.

Stay alert to scams

Your telephone provider will write to you before your service is changed.

Be cautious of unexpected phone calls or doorstep callers asking for payment or personal information. If you are unsure whether a communication is genuine, contact your provider using a trusted telephone number or their official website.

Need more information?

If you have questions about how the switchover will affect you, please contact your telephone provider directly. They will be able to explain what will happen, whether any equipment is required and what support is available for your circumstances.
