A Gunthorpe First World War Tribute

1914-18

The population of Gunthorpe in 1911 according to the Census was 420. 58 young men from Gunthorpe fought in the First World War. 12 were killed in action. 1 was a full time soldier, 10 were conscripts and volunteers and 1 was an Apprentice Merchant Seaman serving on a Royal Navy Battleship. Behind these basic facts are many stories of courage, heartache and suffering. Such a large number of young men leaving Gunthorpe , like in so many small villages across the Country had a devastating effect on the whole Community.

As we approached the hundredth anniversary of the end of the War, each month we paid tribute to the 12 brave men and boys who made the ultimate sacrifice for their Country. We also did not and do not forget the 46 others whose lives were going to change forever after their war time experiences.
