Joint Burial Committee

The Haltwhistle and District Joint Burial Committee has delegated authority to manage and administer the burial functions jointly, relating to the Parish Councils of,

  • Haltwhistle
  • Plenmeller with Whitfield
  • Coanwood
  • Featherstone
  • Thirlwall
  • Greenhead

These Parishes are all represented on the Joint Committee, who meet regularly, and jointly make the decisions necessary, as to the lawful and efficient management of this function.  They, through the Clerk and Cemetery Staff look after the cemeteries of Haltwhistle and Greenhead.

The burial charges alone are not sufficient to cover the full cost of delivering this service.  Which is why each participating Council makes a financial contribution to cover the shortfall.  This is in the form of a budget request to all participating Parishes, and when agreed it is paid from their precept.

The Committee also manages the allotments. This brings in an income, which further reduces the cost to the Parish Councils.  Any Parishioner of a participating Council can apply for an allotment, though there is a waiting list.

In a further effort to reduce the direct cost to the Parish Councils, other maintenance and inspection work is carried out for Parish Councils and charged at a contracted-out rate.
