t was an eventful afternoon at the Fireground today, where the Fire played host to Thatcham. We could discuss the opening 35 minutes but I think I would prefer to chat about the final 25 minutes, which were electrifying! Prior to the opening kickoff, there was something extremely important that was lacking from the players, their listening skills. I think the coaches could have been talking to the boys about basket weaving or science homework and gotten the same response. As the boys jogged out onto the pitch, the two coaches looked at each other dreading how this game might start.
Anyway, the Fire were behind 3-0 and suddenly found a spark. Danny J dribbled from the right wing towards the goal and sent a well weighted pass for Jack to drill home with a first timer hitting the twine. The resurgent Fire were now competing for balls, winning 50 50s and putting in the 100% required against a very strong Thatcham team. Ryan played a long pass through the middle to Danny J who controlled perfectly, then delivered a strike into the right side of the net. The last goal of the game was from a corner. Jay launched a ball perfectly into the box, Josh checked his run, came from behind to meet the ball with a perfect header to earn the Fire a well deserved draw. I say a well deserved draw because of the immense effort that the boys put into the second half.
It was a great team effort in the second half. I thought that Jay was the catalyst in the team's big comeback. If he wasn't on the ball, he was tackling an opponent and showed great leadership. However, the helmet was given to Jack this afternoon as he showed that he is prepared to involve himself in the physicality of a hard fought match. His work rate was excellent and his goal was important in the Fire's big comeback.
Well done Jack and well done to the Fire coming back to earn a point.
