2025 Prestain Cup
Our annual team game of a President’s team versus a Captains’ team didn’t quite go to plan. Our President and Captain no doubt lost sleep with worrying about the weather. Forecasts showed rain in the morning and possibly some showers in the afternoon. An added concern was our green retaining water. Oh dear, do we proceed or not. The decision was made to carry on, but we only had a few rinks available to play on and some of those were going to be challenging.
Some of our very helpful members arrived early to set out the green and to set tables and prepare for the challenges of the afternoon. Was there a Plan B, just in case?
Our President, Sue, and only Captain, Peter, got together to select the teams and we were set for 3 rinks of triples and 1 rink of fours.
Once all members had arrived we got started as quickly as possible. All rinks were wet but rink 3 was very wet and a struggle to play on. We all did our best until the dreaded rain arrived after about 8 ends. There was hope it might be a passing shower but the weather demons were against us, stuck in the pavilion we were!
Never mind, Plan B was put into action. We managed to bring the food delivery forward and whilst we were waiting, our quiz master Peter Worthington put us through our paces with 15 questions on all manner of subjects. Thank you Peter for giving us a fun time and entertaining us whilst we waited patiently. The food arrived over an hour ahead of the original schedule. There was the usual flurry of food distribution so everyone could get on with supper. The food that was well complimented came from Chris’s Fish and Chips on Northfield Road. A big thank you to George for the hurried preparation and delivery.
After the clearing up we all made our happy, contented and soggy way home.
I believe we all made the best of the weather affected afternoon and had a good time. A big thank you as always to those who organised and helped.
One point of note was that the President’s team won, and it was pointed out that as stand in midweek Captain, Sue couldn’t really lose. Peter was, however, quite sure that if we had gone for a full set of ends, the Captains’ team would have triumphed.
