Some Committee members were up early on Saturday 3 November to set up the NHPCSG stand in ‘The Malls’ shopping centre, outside Boots. ‘The Malls’ management had kindly provided chairs, tables and a gazebo – the latter in case of rain.

With the run-up to Christmas, ‘The Malls’ seemed busier than ever, giving the Group Members manning the stand greater opportunity to talk to shoppers and distribute PCUK leaflets.

The Group Publicity Officer, Ken Woolgar, thought that he had ordered more than enough with an extra 300 of the small size ‘Know your prostate: A quick guide’. Most of these were handed out along with quite a bit of other material. It was rewarding to find that by the end of the day there were not many leaflets left.

There was also quite a bit of business at the table displaying PCUK merchandise. The donations were approximately £60.

During the morning, we were honoured by a visit from the Mayor of Basingstoke and Dean, Cllr Sean Keating, and the Mayoress, Mrs Gwen Keating.

The Mayor met and talked with the volunteers manning the stand. He also helped with the distribution of some leaflets to shoppers that gave some basic facts about prostate cancer to alert them about the disease.

Mrs Keating chatted to the wife of one of the volunteers and was interested to hear of the impact of a cancer diagnosis on a partner. They talked about the role of wives and partners in encouraging men to see their G.P. if they have symptoms..

Cllr Keating said “I am very impressed by the hard work and commitment of this local support Group whose mission is to make people more aware of prostate cancer.”

“The sobering statistic that at least one in eight men will be affected by the disease (or one in four if you are from the black community) is a stark reminder for men to be alert for symptoms and to talk to their G..Ps if they have concerns.”

Special thanks go to members of the Group who volunteered to help at this event: Virginia Budd, Iris Woolgar, Verd Nabbs, Richard Holt, John Hare, Dave Morley and Colin Turner. Thanks also go to the management and security staff of ‘The Malls’.

Committee members present were: Alan Instone, Ken Woolgar and Martin Budd.

All in all, the event went well and provides encouragement to repeat it next year.
