North Hampshire Prostate Cancer Support Group Publicity Officer

Presentation to staff at Scottish and Southern Electricity (SSE) Thatcham 19 November 2018

Up to today our publicity events have mainly been static displays or participating in events organised by others such as Macmillan Cancer Support

We were very pleased therefore when we were invited by SSE to give a talk to their staff at their training centre in Thatcham. It was one of the events that the company had planned for their ‘Movember’ month. Movember is a global organisation that champions men’s’ health.

The presentation was given by the Group’s Publicity Officer, Ken Woolgar. accompanied by his wife Iris, our Chairman, Alan Instone, and our Treasurer, Martin Budd.

The presentation ensured that the audience of more than forty were given a few key facts about the prostate and what it did. Symptoms that might be worrying were described and the importance of talking to GPs, particularly in cases where there was a family history of the disease, was emphasised. Some aspects of the PSA test were explained.

Ken gave his personal story of how he was diagnosed and reinforced the message that sometimes there are very few symptoms but that it pays to be vigilant. Iris had made a video clip for the presentation where she talked about the impact of Prostate Cancer on wives and partners. This gave a powerful message about the impact of Ken’s diagnosis and the emotional turmoil that followed.

The presentation also covered the work of the Group in supporting men and their partners.

After a period for questions, staff visited the Group exhibition boards and could take away PCUK leaflets to help reinforce the key messages covered by the presentation.

The organiser in SSE, Sarah Orourke, congratulated our team afterwards and kindly offered to donate to the NHPCSG the total amount that her ‘Movember’ events had generated.

We did not expect a donation and it will be a very welcome addition to the Group’s funds. Our thanks go to the staff of SSE who have contributed and to Sarah in particular.
