The W I in Rockland St Mary was first established in April 1920 and is now nearing its centenary in 2020.

Our meetings are held on the second Tuesday each month at 7.30pm in the Margaret Mack Room and our current membership is 35.   We have a wide range of speakers and demonstrators for our meetings, topics ranging from historical subjects, travel, local interests and members are always willing to give activities a try, from tai-che to Bollywood dancing instructed by our speakers. In our May meeting the Resolution to be voted on at the National WI AGM provokes thoughtful discussion.  Over the years the WI as an organisation has passed resolutions calling for Government action over many topics, latterly marine pollution and this year our resolution calls for greater support for Mental Health which matters as much as physical health.

In addition to our monthly meetings we have a Craft Group, a Scrabble group, and a Book Club, besides organising occasional walks which usually end with a pub lunch. Theatre visits and day visits to places of interest are regular features.  We enter teams in the Federation Darts and 10-Pin Bowling tournaments with varying success and always have members attending the Federation Meetings.  Our members can also attend the many events and courses put on by the Norfolk Federation WI.

The WI has given the village a wooden seat outside our village shop,  raised the money and presented the village sign in 1986; produced a village history book in 1988 and Mrs Jean Whitlam a current member produced a new version in 2013 following a Village History exhibition. We have given a nebulizer to our Dr’s surgery, have planted trees and currently maintain a large floral display pot in the village. Most village organizations have WI members involved in their activities, the Gardening Club, the local Church Council, the Parish Council and “The Bramrocks” our local Amateur Dramatic group, which started after the WI had put on one or two public performances.  The bi-annual Village Festival is part of our life, putting on a display of crafts and providing refreshments for all.

There is much more to our WI but the greatest thing is fun and friendship in abundance.
