Sandwich History Society Donation to Sandwich Museum

Sandwich History Society has donated £500 to Sandwich Museum, recognising the two organisations’ shared commitment to promoting and preserving the history and heritage of Sandwich. The Museum already plays an important part in the Society’s activities. Many of the society’s guided tours begin there, while several Society members are also active as volunteers and guides at the Guildhall and Museum.

Mike Elmes, Head of the Society’s Tour Guides, said: ‘the Museum is an invaluable starting point for understanding Sandwich. It gives visitors an overview of the town’s history and, importantly, the map there helps them understand where Sandwich was, and where it is now, in relation to a coastline that has changed so dramatically over the centuries.’

The Mayor of Sandwich, Cllr Emmet Csuka, welcomed the donation and the close relationship between the two organisations: ‘It is very pleasing to see Sandwich History Society and Sandwich Museum working together in this way. I hope this is the beginning of further opportunities for the Society and Museum to collaborate in celebrating and promoting the remarkable history of our town.’

Museum Manager Dr Natasha Poljakowa added: ‘We are very grateful to Sandwich History Society for this donation. The money has been used to purchase a new card reader, making it easier for visitors to make payments and purchase items from the Museum.' The items available to purchase include Sandwich History Society publications as well as other books, gifts and memorabilia.

The Society hopes that the donation will not only support the Museum’s work but also strengthen the links between two organisations with a common purpose: helping residents and visitors alike discover, understand and enjoy Sandwich’s extraordinary heritage.
