About the Council

Southorpe Parish Council consists of five councillors – all living in the village. They were appointed at the elections in May 2024. Each has specific areas on which they focus. Each councillor is usually elected for an initial period of five years when elections are held. Owing to the pandemic the current term is for four years only.

The council meets every two months at Barnack Village Hall and notices are placed on the village noticeboards and on this website with agendas, minutes from previous meetings and any other relevant news or information.

The parish council is funded through a precept from Peterborough City Council’s council tax bill plus any other grants/gifts made available.  

In essence, the parish council focuses on the very local issues impacting on residents in the village including environmental; roads/transportation; planning and conservation.  The council acts as the first port of call for residents wishing to raise any specific issues.

 

The Parish Council is committed to preserving the nature and character of the village in line with its conservation status and representing/supporting all residents.  Key priorities include:

  • Safeguarding the conservation status of the village.
  • Reviewing and commenting on planning applications.
  • Exploring environmental initiatives to improve the lives of residents.
  • Monitoring our road, including traffic volume, traffic speed and road maintenance.
  • Ensuring that council funds are managed, monitored and spent wisely.
  • Engaging with local and national councils, charitable organisations and other groups for the benefit of the parish and its residents.
  • Working with other local parish councils, the ward councillor and local authority on a wide range of issues, such as rural crime, that affect rural communities like ours.
  • Encouraging community involvement in a range of projects that make a positive contribution to village life.
