Saturday, 4th January saw the first short mat competition of 2020, when the Dorset Members and National Qualifiers Over 55 Pairs tournament took place at the Dorset Bowls Resort. 25 pairs entered the competition, including 3 from Tarrant Keyneston.

Peter Hawkins and Sally Burton won through from their group to be in the sixteen pairs in the knockout stages. Their fine form continued, as they won games in the round of 16, the quarter-final and the semi-final.

The final saw them face Richard and Angie Nichol from Flight Refuelling. A good start saw them establish a 3-0 lead, but their opponents picked up a three to level the score. Each time one pair edged ahead, the other would claw back, and after seven of the eight ends had been played the score was locked at 6-6.

Peter came to the mat with the opponents holding shot. His first bowl fell just short, and when he came back to bowl the final wood of the match his only option was to try to tap it closer. His bowl was on the perfect line, and hit the wood, which moved it forward but there was an agonising wait to see whether it would drop in. The shot was conceeded, and by the time the wood finally fell it was too late to consider whether it would have counted.

Peter and Sally finished as runners-up, after an excellent performance, and hopefully 2020 will be a great year for them.

Many thanks to Lynn Dean of Dorset SMBA for the photo.
